Thyroid From my experience, I noticed that the Thyroid is the most important, yet the most neglected gland in our body.
The butterfly-shaped gland secretes hormones that manage essential functions in your body such as metabolizing food, regulating your sleep pattern, weight management, mood swings, depression, and anxiety. Conventional Healthcare practitioners solely rely on blood tests, and subsequently ‘prescription hormone therapy’ to treat thyroid-related problems. The attention to food and nutrients to encourage the proper functioning of the gland has long been ignored. The nutrients that the thyroid gland needs are easily available in many food items.
Do you know that Iodine is a trace mineral that plays a critical role in the formation of the primary thyroid hormone called thyroxine? Excess iodine in your system could lead to goiter. You could prevent iodine deficiency by choosing to eat the right amounts of iodine-rich foods such as seaweeds, iodized salt, and seafood. (1) Do you know that Seaweeds are the numero uno food for iodine deficiency? They offer the broadest range of nutrients, containing virtually all the minerals found in the ocean, which are also essential for the human body. Seaweeds like kelp, nori, and kombu could play a major role in supporting thyroid function. These seaweeds also contain pantothenic acid and riboflavin, which are B vitamins that are very useful to those suffering from anxiety and depression due to mismanagement of their thyroid. (2)
With the fact that protein transports the thyroid hormone to all your tissues, they are also very effective in supporting your thyroid. I will recommend you add more eggs, nuts, seeds, fish, and legumes to your diet. You should also avoid the intake of soy and soy products like tofu, soy milk, and soy granules as soy impedes cell receptors and disturbs the entire thyroid function. (3)
Too often, people think of “wellness” in temporary terms. They want to work with doctors and take short-term steps, like medication, to improve annoying symptoms but never deal with unhealthy routines and lifestyle choices that created the illness in the first place.
After years of seeing this happen with individuals like you, Chen Ben Asher opened a functional and integrative nutritional clinic that not only helps people improve their overall wellness and health, but also give them the tools and coaching to successfully continue their journey for the rest of their lives.
Do you know that 20% of thyroid function depends on a good gut ecology? I highly recommend that you take probiotics or have home-made Dahi or yogurt regularly. You should also eat lots of garlic, which kills yeast.
This might but come as a surprise but, do you know that fats are of great nutritional importance when producing and regulating hormones in the body? If you are getting insufficient fat and cholesterol, you could be exacerbating hormonal imbalance. I recommend natural healthy fats such as ghee, nuts, full-fat cheese, butter, coconut oil /milk, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and oily fish like salmon. Make sure they are part of your diet. (4)
In order to keep your thyroid working smoothly, you should eat more apples to detoxify your body. When you have metals (such as mercury) in your body, your body will be prevented from using the thyroid it needs. This is why I would recommend you eat enough fresh fruits like apples to flush out the bad stuff. (5)
Beyond just being a party staple, Avocados are filled will healthy thyroid nutrients. They are a great source of monounsaturated fat and antioxidants, which our thyroids need to keep up with the rest of our bodies. N.B. They are also very delicious. (6)
Goitrogens are chemical substances that interfere with the body’s iodine absorption. With this in mind, I will advise you to avoid foods like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, peanuts, radishes, soybeans, spinach, and kale, especially in their raw form. But if you eat them after being cooked, their goitrogenic compounds would be inactivated. (7)
Quinoa is not called a superfood for anything, these tiny seeds are packed with loads of healthy nutrients that your thyroids need. With its high antioxidant level, Quinoa could prevent your thyroids from slowing down. Have you considered replacing your daily lunch with a bow of Colorful Quinoa Salad? (8)
Brazil nuts might not cross your mind when you are shopping for your weekly groceries but I’ll advise you to add this to your grocery list. These nuts are loaded with a nutrient called selenium, which helps keep your thyroid humming all day long. With enough selenium in your diet, your body would be protected against goiters and hypothyroidism. (9)
Studies have shown that repeated insulin spikes tend to destroy the thyroid gland. Do you know that sugar spikes can cause your adrenal glands to secrete excess cortisol? This excess cortisol could be overused (when you eat sugar daily) and would lead to suppression of the pituitary function, which in turn affects the function of the thyroid. (10)
