Bloating and gases is a widespread problem that affects almost 7 million people every year in the United States alone or 1 in 10 regularly.
You can help yourself if you know more about prevention and treatment of bloating and gases. In my experience as a board-certified nutrition specialist, I have witnessed even people who don’t pay enough attention to either one because they don’t think that it is severe or requires a particular treatment. I want to draw the attention that it needs attention.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLOATING AND GASES:
- Bloating is the feeling when the abdominal region is more extensive or so-called “abdominal discomfort”
- The gas itself “is made in the stomach and intestines as your body breaks down food into energy.”
You can have this uncomfortable feeling (bloating) without having gases. Both of them mainly is connected to eating. The more severe condition is distention that the stomach area physically is more significant.

DISTENTION CAUSES:
- A tumor
- Increased fluid around the abdomen organs
- Obesity
- Enlargement of an abdomen organ
This problem can also cause accumulation of gas or fluid in the whole digestive system.
The functional medicine needs to identify the cause of bloating and gases. Gas might be a reasonable thing as “it is normal to pass gas from 6 to 20 times per day.” The digestive system does that. Gas might be a sign of more severe problems like gastroesophageal reflux disease and ulcers.
BLOATING CAUSES:
- Crohn’s disease
- A hernia
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Colon cancer

As for the treatment, I will first want to know about the foods that a person eats as well as stomach gas symptoms. It is good to keep track of the amount and type of foods that you consume. You might need to entirely change the diet or more radical steps to gain gas and bloating relief. There might be certain foods that you can even be allergic to, for example, lactose intolerance would mean that you need to stop using any dairy products. You also might need to swallow less air.
Some particular medications can even give gas pain relief and help in other ways. If the whole gut is out of balance or there are some other problems with it, gut supplements might be the right treatment. It is necessary to have professional help to avoid eating less nutritious foods and other negative aspects. Home remedies for gas in the stomach might only have temporary relief.
