IS THERE A WAY TO MEASURE METABOLISM?

One can come around metabolism, and most of the sources say that it is good that the metabolic rate is higher level.

That’s why it is also fundamental for a person first to understand how his or her metabolic rate is to know what kind of exercises, diets, and other solutions to pursue.

What is metabolic rate?

Any metabolic process to occur in the body require energy and anabolic processes that “build up tissues, and catabolic processes, which break down tissues and fuel sources for energy.” Ph. D. Mark P. Kelly, who is also an exercise physiologist, further explains that “the rate at which these processes occur is measured in calories per unit of time.”1 Most often, the period is a day. Calories are used to do regular body functions like breathing or pumping blood, but how to measure how much exactly calories you burn per day?

Metabolic rate measurement

It might seem that the process of burning calories might be hard or even impossible to measure, but there are ways how to do it.

Standardized formula

This can include information on weight, height, age, and sex. One of the known formulas is the Harris-Benedict equation:

  • “Women: 655 + (9.6 x weight in kilograms) + (1.8 x height in centimeters) – (4.7 x age in years)
  • Men, 66 + (13.7 x weight in kilograms) + (5 x height in centimeters) – (6.8 x age in years)”

Of course, there are also various challenges with these measurements, especially if a person is overweight. The reason for that is that formulas like these have a basis for average people. People also different also in the way the fat occurs to them as some might eat almost everything and gain hardly any additional fat although they eat much more than a person with a seemingly better metabolic rate.

INDIRECT CALORIMETRY

It uses expired gasses to calculate the amounts and also used types of fuel. One of the measurements is the Weir equation:

“REE = 1.44

VO2 = volume of oxygen uptake (ml/min)

VCO2 = volume of carbon dioxide output (mL/min)”1

It is possible to apply this equation to measure how many calories burned per minute. But if the interest is in the full day’s rate, you need to multiply the total by 1,440. There are also special devices like the BodGem that can help to measure metabolic rate.
