I, Chen Ben Asher, Board-certified nutritionist, have had various women of different age coming to me and saying that they have drastic energy level swing and non-stop craving for salty or sweet food.
I can say that in many cases, their hormones and neurotransmitters were the underlying cause of these problems. Many people might even think that this has to do with their excessive weight that is bothering from staying fit and lively.
Did you know that there are neurotransmitters that are also hormones? When they are out of balance, it means that it brings a bad effect on the overall health. In general, neurotransmitters are molecules that are responsible for transferring between brains and nervous systems. That means that it is important also to understand how do neurotransmitters and hormones influence the brain and behavior. That will make you understand why you have problems to concentrate, mood changes, and other issues.
Also, hormones are essential for one’s well-being. Hormones are transferred molecules of the endocrine systems. As people age and various other factors influence the body, it gets harder to keep the balance.
HOW IS A HORMONE DIFFERENT FROM A NEUROTRANSMITTER?
The answer is that they deal with different parts of the body, not only the brain, for example, through adrenal glands to the blood sugar level.
HORMONES FUNCTION AND DIFFERENCE
- “chemical messengers of the endocrine system”
- Stimulate cells
- Raise blood calcium level
- Stimulate calcium, etc. absorption
- Belong to the endocrine system
- Produced by endocrine glands
- Hormone effect takes longer time
- Regulate their target organs
- Transfer happens by blood
Examples of hormones are GH, ADH, Oxytocin, glycogen, insulin. Hormonal disbalance problems include excessive insulin that is usually from too much sugar and problems with its absorption. From stress, a person can also have too much cortisol or adrenalin as well as lack of thyroid. Too much insulin is one of the top problems nowadays with symptoms like shortness of breath, anxiety, sweating without any apparent reason, etc. In some cases, even low blood sugar that is called hypoglycemia can be the reason for these kinds of problems. If these symptoms are not addressed properly, that can lead to heart disease, brain gaining, dementia, obesity, cancer and other serious problems.
NEUROTRANSMITTER FUNCTION AND DIFFERENCE
- Belong to the nervous system
- Transmission happens by the synaptic cleft
- Produced by neurons
- Target cells are specific neurons or some other cells
- Action is a fact (e.g., milliseconds)
- Stimulate the postsynaptic membranes

The goal is to regain the balance of the body and stabilize metabolism. To achieve that you also need to balance hormones like the stress hormones, thyroid function that is primarily responsible for hormone production. Same goes for brain and mood neurotransmitters that are chemicals that might be as problematic. Next, you can read about detoxification.
