Fructose metabolism

The human liver is the main organ responsible for metabolizing fructose. But liver cannot survive dal with such a large amount of fructose (e.g., 85-100 grams per day). It contributes to reduced sensitivity and insulin-glucose intolerance. The major consequences of the high influx of fructose are that “perturbations in glucose metabolism and glucose uptake pathways and a significantly enhanced rate of de novo lipogenesis and TG synthesis.”1 Fructose insulin response is insulin resistance. Characteristics are metabolic dyslipidemia because of excessive production of atherogenic lipoprotein. Western diets are usually rich in fructose, cholesterol, and fat. People need to know more about glucose vs. fructose metabolism as well as other risks of high fructose consumption.
