Obesity Link to Cancer

Obesity Link to Cancer

Nowadays in the hectic lifestyle and all the offered food, it is hard to understand which things to choose and what to resist. Not thinking about it and constantly choosing something that harms the body can lead to cancer and various other health problems thus it is important to see the links and possible choices to make.

Obesity is a condition that can become a widespread condition. Obesity can be defined as “condition in which a person has an abnormally high and unhealthy proportion of body fat.”[1] It is easy to evaluate the body mass thanks to the special body mass index (BMI).

The Calculation of BMI:      Person’s weight (in kg)

Height (in m)

This is more precise measurement than just looking at the weight. The BMI guidelines are established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in categories such as1:

BMI BMI Categories
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 to 24.9 Normal
25.0 to 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and above Obese1

This refers to people who are at least 20 years old and older. Numerous researches and estimations prove that additional weight is linked to a higher possibility to have further health problems like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, etc. as well as more severe like stroke or cancer. It has also become a sad fact that obesity has increased same as it increases within age.

It is also well estimated that obesity leads to increased risks of different cancer types:

  • Breast
  • Endometrium (in the lining of the uterus)
  • Pancreas
  • Esophagus
  • Kidney
  • Gallbladder
  • Thyroid

Also, other types are possible and occur occasionally. With the rate of increased obesity, it is also estimated that by 2030 there will occur about 500,000 new cancer cases1 in the United States only not even talking about other states. The research about obesity also found out that if BMI would be reduced by at least 1% that is about 1 kg, it could prevent an increase of cancer and lower for about 100,000 cases.

It is not that easy to explain the connection between obesity and cancer. There are numerous findings that are viewed as tigers, but at the same time, each case is different. Some of the reasons lead to the fact that fat comes with excessive estrogen level that is part of the risk of cancer. People with additional weight in many cases also have insulin resistance or hyperinsulinemia, and this is an environment that tumors like. Furthermore, fat cells also produce hormones called adipokines. They can lead to inhibit the growth of the cells. Perhaps more complicated is the proved tumor growth due to “mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and AMP-activated protein kinase.”1 Protein kinase happens when this special kinase enzyme modifies other proteins. Obese people are also proved to have increased inflammation possibility, and that is associated with higher cancer risk too.
