There are numerous treatment methods regarding cancer. The effectiveness of them has wide been discussed and researched on different patients, and the results are worth to be looked closely.
As one of the recent researches can be mentioned done by James D. Watson, Ph.D. who is also a discovered of DNA’S double helix. He has doubted the effectivity of antioxidants by various supported arguments. He even stated that antioxidants are most likely to cause cancer than prevent it but it is in a case of late-stage cancer’s and its treatment. Especially it can be attributed to vitamin E. At the same time; he also stated that blueberries could be eaten mainly due to their good taste not because that they would in any way help regarding cancer.
There are numerous other studies carried out that are for a positive antioxidant effect of treating cancer. As one of those definitely is done by Keith Block, MD and Penny Block, Ph.D. who more than 30 years ago also founded a clinic. In their study done in 2009, they analyzed breast cancer (stage IV, metastatic) treatments from 1984 until 1997. To their research contributed various other sophisticated researchers like some from the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment in Skokie, Illinois as well as various other like Debu Tripathy, MD, of USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles who at that time had done 73 PubMed-listed articles about breast cancer. The patients apart from chemotherapy and other more serious treatment also included an antioxidant-rich low-fat diet that mainly consisted of legumes, grains, vegetables, and fruits as well as individualized supplementation.
The supplementation included a multivitamin-mineral supplement that is specially designed for cancer patients, a phytochemically rich vegetable and fruit drinks as well as other supplements like calcium-d-glutarate, green tea, reishi tea, carotenoids, and melatonin. Chemotherapy lead to nutrient deficiencies thus intravenous vitamin infusions including A, B, C, D, E, K- vitamins. Their researched groups overall survival time was 38 months as opposed to 12-27 months from other clinics with different treatment methods.
Another research from 2011 that had similar results came from Northern California and published in the PubMed-indexed journal. The main authors were Michael McCulloch, Lac, MPH, Ph.D. and Michael Broffaman, Lac, who both were from Pine St. Clinic. Their focus was lung cancer based on 193 patients about ten years before the publication. Many were given Pan-Asian plus vitamins (PAM+V). The results showed that PAM+V helped to reduce the risk of “stage I by 95%, stage II by 64%, stage III by 29 percent, and stage IV by 75%.”1
Also, definitions of antioxidants themselves prove their positive effect like “various beneficial compounds.” You can find them in numerous foods, especially vegetables and fruits or human-made as supplements. They can interact with some other medicines and thus their use should be monitored.
Antioxidants can be beneficial for cancer treatment but each case is different, and their effect might vary. Yet the viewed cases showed that there were no cases when antioxidants worsened the case thus proving their beneficial use.
